A small native install — no runtime to fetch, no account needed to use it, and the free tier never ends — sign in only when you want your notes on more than one machine.
There is no onboarding and no account wall. The vault is created on first launch, in your own Application Support folder, and you can move it later.
Preferences → Import reads a Markdown folder or an Obsidian vault directly; anything else an agent converts first. You approve a preview before a note is written.
Preferences → CLI links the vn binary that ships inside the app, so the same tools an agent uses are one command away in a shell.
